![]() 4-packs and 8-packs of the batteries come complete with storage cases but, stated as a ‘safety feature’ they’re only 20% charged before being shipped, so you need to fully charge them before first use. They also include over-charge, over-discharge, over-voltage and short-circuit protection. The batteries have a steel shell and are designed to resist over-pressure, to ensure they’re leak-free. ![]() The EBL batteries have a rated working temperature range of -20 degrees to +60 degrees Celsius, or -4 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, so they’ll keep going in extreme environments. As such, it matches the likes of Eneloop Pro and Powerowl's range-topping AA batteries for capacity. There are various capacity options in their AA line-up but the 2800mAh is currently the most powerful. Only supplied 20% charged (stated as for safety's sakeĮstablished in 1998, EBL has earned a good reputation over the years, for making high-quality rechargeable batteries and chargers. The flipside is that the maximum number of times you can recharge the batteries over its lifetime is rated at 500, compared with 2100 times for regular Eneloop batteries. They’re therefore ideally suited to power-hungry devices with a hefty current drain. Compared with regular ENELOOP batteries, they have a higher capacity of 2500mAh compared with 1900mAh, outstripping alkaline batteries as well as many rechargeable options. Indeed, the batteries are rated to work in temperatures from -20 to +50° C (-4° to 122° F).Īs with most recent NiMH batteries, they come pre-charged (using solar power, no less) and are ready to use, straight out of the box. At Digital Camera World, we’ve been using Eneloop Pro batteries for years and have enjoyed 100 per cent reliability, even in the harshest conditions. That can be really frustrating if you go to use them, only to find they’ve gone flat.įor photographers using batteries in their flashguns and anyone who needs to be able to trust their kit in critical situations, reliability is a key factor. Even so, early versions and many that are still available today tend to discharge over a few weeks after being fully charged, even if they’re just sat in a box doing nothing. They don’t suffer from a memory effect and enable higher electrical capacities, so last for longer between charges. Since the 1990s, NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride) batteries have been a much more popular choice for popular battery sizes like AA. Cadmium is also toxic, and its use was banned in many world regions in the early 2000s. Nicad (Nickel Cadmium) batteries were invented all the way back in 1899 and were still popular in the 1990s but they suffered from the dreaded ‘memory effect’, so you’d typically need to discharge them completely before recharging them. But they haven’t been without their problems. From the graph below, you can see how stable the results were, with the batteries barely fluctuating for levels of power.Rechargeable batteries have been available for years, as a viable alternative to alkaline cells that typify the ‘throwaway culture’. Next, I cycled the batteries 50 times (charging and discharging), taking measurements every 10 cycles. Initially, the batteries returned a capacity of 2101mAh, which is slightly above the rated capacity of 1900mAh. Next, I tested capacity through a high-drain test (600mA +/-20%). Here, I measured 1.23V, which is just above that limit. First, I measured voltage, which should start at a minimum of 1.2V. I tested the Eneloop AA using an Ansmann Energy XC3000 battery tester. Exceptionally stable capacities in my tests. However, their rated capacity of 1900mAh isn’t the best, so you may need to turn to higher-capacity batteries – such as the Duracell Rechargeable AA– for more demanding applications. That makes these units almost as good as alkaline batteries: you can charge them, put them in a cupboard drawer and have them ready to use when you want. Second, the Eneloop AA are designed to hold power, maintaining 70% charge after 10 years. ![]() That’s the highest number I’ve seen, even higher than the 1500 cycles of the GP ReCyko Pro AA batteries. For starters, the batteries are designed to last for up to 2100 charging cycles. Longevity is one of the main factors to look for in a set of rechargeable batteries, and the Eneloop AA delivers on that front in spades. For general-purpose alkaline replacements, they’re a brilliant choice. Sure, they’re a little more expensive than rival units, and they don’t offer the highest capacities but they can handle more than 2000 charge cycles and retain charge for a long time. The Eneloop AA batteries are built to be eco-friendly.
